1-2-4 Go

Any opportunity to occupy the screener’s defender goes a long way in making sure the ball handler can aggressively attack the ball screen to create for his/herself or their teammates. In the play above, we do exactly that.

The PG gets deep on the left wing near FT extended. The 2 Man, on the ball-side elbow screens away for the 4 Man and clears to the opposite corner. Pushed 3 up to wing.

4 sprints off 2’s screens into a screen for the PG. The PG attacks and the 4 Man pops for a jumper or an open side to attack defender. In the diagram, you see the 5 Man is out of the way of the action. This does cause spacing issues on the weak side with 5, 3, and 1. You could choose to put the 5 man on the right block. But this will cause spacing issues as PG may have a lane to the rim.

Also, you want 5 higher and out of the way because you do not want x5 to help x4 on the pop. Some teams will Cross out or X out their bigs on this action if 5’s position allows for it. On the ball screen x4 will stay with the PG until x1 has recovered but then will recover to 5. On the ball screen, x5 will sprint to close out on the 4 Man in the X-Out action.
